What do to when you’re miles away from a vet![]()
Travelling with your dog and enjoying the great outdoors together can be a wonderful experience. But what happens when something goes wrong and your pet requires urgent veterinary treatment? ![]()

Snake bites, 1080 poisoning, lacerations and heat exhaustion are just some of the emergencies that vets receive calls about. Unfortunately there isn’t always a vet nearby when you’re holidaying in a rural area.
We recommend the following:
Stay calm
Call your vet or the local emergency vet centre to get advice.
Call someone to help you move your dog if they can’t walk.
Keep a towel in the car so that you can bundle your dog in, or use it to drag your dog.
If your pet is bleeding, apply firm pressure or a bandage to the wound.
Heat stroke: Move your pet to a cool location and offer cool water. Apply cold water to your pet’s paw pads, and drape a towel soaked in cool water over them.
If you are planning to travel to a remote location with your pet, please don’t hesitate to call your vet for advice before leaving home.![]()
